As with any significant phenomenon, rumors, gossip, and unscientific theories are making their way onto people’s screens and minds, which, considering the callous nature of the Coronavirus, will have severe consequences on the health of thousands of people. There’s a lot of information circulating about COVID-19, so it’s important to know what’s right and what’s not. However, it’s important to remember that this is a novel coronavirus, which means we are still learning about it.
The previous editions of this selection were quite a hit, so feel free to check them out, as well :
Wearing a mask will not prevent you from getting the virus.
A mask may not protect you from getting the virus but could prevent you from spreading it. Patients with the Coronavirus wear a face mask to protect others around them. Although, even if you are not infected, you can very well be a carrier. So, wearing a mask may not necessarily prevent you from getting infected, but it will protect those around you. It goes without saying that if you are coughing or sneezing, a mask is necessary.
Pets at home cannot spread the new Coronavirus.
There is no evidence suggesting that companion animals/pets such as dogs or cats can be infected with the new Coronavirus. However, it is always a good idea to wash your hands with soap and water after contact with pets.
Exposure to hot sun or temperatures above 25° C will not kill the virus.
The belief that hot temperatures kill the Coronavirus is false. If it were real, countries with warm temperatures would not have reported cases of COVID-19. From the evidence so far, the COVID-19 virus can be transmitted in all areas, including areas with hot and humid weather. You can catch COVID-19, no matter how sunny or hot the weather is.
Taking a hot shower frequently prevents infection.
Taking a hot bath will not prevent you from catching COVID-19. Our average body temperature remains around 36.5°C to 37°C, irrespective of the temperature of your bath or shower.
Antibiotics cannot prevent or cure CoronavirusCoronavirus.
Antibiotics are only effective on bacteria, and viruses remain unharmed by them. However, if you are hospitalized for the novel Coronavirus, you may receive antibiotics because bacterial co-infection is possible.
Consumption of Vitamin C does not prevent you from catching Coronavirus.
Scientifically speaking, our body can absorb on a certain amount of Vitamin C, any excesses are removed from the body as waste. Doctors advise us to consume an appropriate amount of fruits, citrus, or otherwise because they not only contain vitamin C but also because they contain a lot of other beneficial nutrients that build up the immune system. Daily consumption of at least two different kinds of fruits is a good idea for general immunity, not specifically to protect against the COVID-19 pathogen.
Drinking alcohol will not protect you against Coronavirus.
Frequent or excessive alcohol consumption can increase your risk of health problems. Fear and misinformation have generated a dangerous myth that consuming high-strength alcohol can kill the COVID-19 virus. It does not. Drinking any alcohol poses health risks, but consuming high-strength ethyl alcohol (ethanol), particularly if it has been contaminated with methanol, can result in severe health consequences, including death.
Consuming meat will not infect you with Coronavirus.
Another misconception doing the rounds is that one should completely prohibit the usage of meat, as this virus spreads from animals to people. What we need to understand is that nothing has been established so far, and it is entirely safe to eat non-vegetarian food in India. The only thing that you need to take care of is that the meat has been hygienically cooked and should not be raw, which is the best way to prevent any disease transmitted through animal meat.
Coronavirus or COVID-19 has already claimed around 1,83,424 lives globally, with almost 26,28,527 confirmed cases around the world. If the virus doesn’t take our breath away, the myths and fake news, so, let’s pledge not to pay heed to these myths and keep ourselves protected through the proven and most effective ways- staying home, and maintaining hygiene.
